First .eu domain name registered

The European organisation EURid is the first of a future list of individuals, agencies and companies with .eu domain names.

The www.eurid.eu is the world's first .eu internet address. However, the registration of the first domain name in the new Top Level Domain (TLD) has not yet been followed by any others. European individuals will therefore have to wait until 2006. The idea of registering a European TLD dates back several years, but so far virtually nothing has happened.

In order for anyone to be able to register a European domain name, it was necessary to register the .eu domain and lay the technical foundations in the so-called root servers. The introduction of the new European domain name is also intended to demonstrate European unity on the Internet.

The next step in the process will be a four-month so-called sunrise period, during which the main task will be to secure online brand and name rights for the most important and largest European companies, as well as European organisations and agencies. During these four months, the European Commission wants to prevent domain names from being taken by rogue registrars from well-known companies such as DaimlerChrysler, Deutsche Telekom or Siemens.

Once the sunrise period has expired, any EU citizen, company or NGO will be able to register a .eu domain name from the beginning of 2006. The demand for this is already huge.
